JOSE Rizal University withstood National University ’s huge comeback effort to post a narrow 61-57 Sunday night in the opening of Fil-Oil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

Relying heavily on their relentless hustle and execution, the Homegrown Flying-V first-runner up Heavy Bombers captured their first win to deliver the Bulldogs their first setback of the series.

“It was effort,” said two-year-old JRU head coach Ariel Vanguardia. “Although I’m not satisfied because of our lapses and inconsistent game, I still credit the boys for not allowing NU to upset us.”

Forward Jason Nocom was the only player for JRU who scored in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Marvin Hayes collected 16 rebounds and made nine points, while Maui Pradas and Jhe Agas contributed seven apiece.

JRU’s hardnosed defense worked effectively down the stretch to deny every rally made by NU particularly in the closing minutes where the Heavy Bombers limited the Bulldogs to only 11 points.

“We tried our best but JRU had stopped us in every rally we made,” said NU mentor Manny Dandan. “I’m hoping my players have learned something in this bitter experience.”

Ex-San Sebastian College stalwart Raymond Aguilar and Mike Salvado racked up 16 points each, while Jewel Ponferada made 12 points and collared 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

JRU started hot, with Nocom, Agas and Wilson providing the baskets in the first period, to surge ahead, 16-11 lead at the end of the first frame. The heavy Bombers sustained the same effort to maintain the lead at the end of the half, 35-29.

Aguilar scored eight points in the third period, including two stabs with 2:06 to go before the final period to slice the Heavy Bombers’ edge to a score of 40-42.

The Bulldogs also came to within two points, 53-55 in the last 1:36 after a Raymond Aguilar basket.

But the Heavy Bombers scored 6 unanswered points with back-to-back baskets from Nocom and Pradas to seal the victory.

JRU 61: Nocom 10, Hayes 9, Pradas 7, Agas 7, Kabigting 6, Wilson 5, Cunanan 3, Bungahis 2, Lituana 1.
