Bulldogs stun Red Lions

NOBODY expects a powerhouse team to lose against a lowly squad.

But National University did the “unexpected” when they upset NCAA reigning champion San Beda College, 84-76, on Wednesday in the Fil-Oil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

Point Guard Jay Jahnke scored 14 of his 26 points – probably the biggest in his collegiate basketball career – in the final frame to hand the Bulldogs their first win after losing to Jose Rizal University, 61-57, in the opener last Sunday.

“It was effort,” said Jahnke, who fired three straight triples to erase the Red Lions’ 74-65 advantage in the early part of the payoff frame. “Despite we’re down by almost 20 points, we didn’t surrender.”

Jonathan Fernandez, who also had 26 points for NU, gave the Bulldogs the first taste of the lead after draining a go-ahead triple, 75-74, with 1:24 to go in the final quarter.

Then after San Beda College missed two opportunities to regain the lead, Jahnke, the unlikely hero, scored on a three-point play off Sam Ekwe’s foul to stretch their lead to 78-74 with 42 ticks to go.

The Red Lions made only one field goal in that remaining stretch as the Bulldogs were able to score six times in the free throw line to seal the win.

“This is a sweet victory for us,” said NU head coach Manny Dandan. “I just told them that we are here to gain experience that we could use it in the UAAP. I’m hoping we would sustain this.”

San Beda College took an insurmountable 21-4 spread after Maggay’s jumper with a minute left in the 1st quarter.

Samuel Ekwe’s two dunks flattered the fans and provided the Red Lions a 33-19 lead with 6:17 before Escobal hit the last four shots from the free throw line to close the first half with the Red Lions leading, 41-29.

The Bulldogs, through Jahnke and Fernandez, fueled NU’s rally that occured mostly at the start of second half and narrowed the gap to 58-54 by 3rd quarter’s end.

Box scores:

NU 84 — Jahnke 26, Fernandez 26, Catamora 12, Lingao-Lingao 7, Aguilar 5, Salbado 3, Berry 2, Luy 1.

SAN BEDA 76 — Escobal 21, Ekwe 13, Lanete 13, Tecson 10, Aljamal 8, Magay 4, Hermida 3, Marcelo 2, Taganas 0.

Quarter scores: 10-23, 29-41, 54-58, 84-76.
