Letran College barges into the win column

LETRAN College barged into the win column Friday with a magnificent 72-63 stopping of Ateneo De Manila University in the Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

“At last we got our first win,” said long-time Letran mentor Louie Alas. “My players have learned how to find a way to win. I’m hoping we maintain this.”

Forward RJ Jazul drilled in eight of his 15 points in the final quarter, including a basket with 2:07 remaining for a 68-60 lead. Paolo Dizon fired a triple to slice down the Blue Eagles’ deficit to 68-63 with only 1:04 left.

But Jazul made two free throws and John Melegrito delivered the goods by hitting a jumper with 29 ticks to go to give the Knights a 1-1 slate.

6-foot-5 Dino Daa added 11 points and collected 10 boards, while Bryan Faundo had 10 points and Ando Gil Quinday made 9.

The Knights, which lost to San Beda College in the opener, started strong after Daa scored a three-point play with 1:12 to go in the opening frame to give them a 19-10 lead.

The Blue Eagles, led by guard Luis Gonzaga and Christopher Sumalinog, bombarded the Knights in the second period with a blazing 16-8 attack capped by a breakaway lay up of Sumalinog to close the half leading at 30-27.

Letran responded in the paint, with most players scoring from the shaded area, to overpower Ateneo in the third quarter, 25-15. Quinday gave the Knights a 50-41 lead with 1:44 to go before going to the payoff period after knocking down two jump shots.

Jazul took charge in the final period for Letran to keep the lead for good.
