Red Lions with some NCAA pride

San Beda College showed some NCAA pride Friday night after making mincemeat of last year’s UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas , 103-82, for their second win in the Fil-Oil Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

After losing to UAAP’s favorite whipping boys – National University , the Red Lions unleashed a scorching rally in the final three quarters after trailing by 13-14 at the end of the first period.

The victory gave the defending NCAA champion a 2-1 record while the Growling Tigers absorbed their second loss after winning to University of Perpetual Help via default last Wednesday.

“We were all frustrated the last time we lost to NU,” said newly-acquired San Beda College head coach Frankie Lim. “So we really worked very hard to beat UST, the UAAP champion.”

Guard Pong Escobal piled up a tournament-high 30 points, including 11 in the final quarter, with eight rebounds and four assists and 6-foot-4 forward Yousef Aljamal provided San Beda with nine of his 22 points also in the final quarter.

Escobal’s two treys in the early part of the game gave San Beda its biggest lead, 85-68. Escobal also added three more baskets to stretch the lead to 91-72 with still 4:32 left and the Tigers couldn’t trim the gap from there.

Last year’s NCAA MVP 6-foot-8 Nigerian Samuel Ekwe got 16 points, collected 18 rebounds and swatted away six UST attempts, while Gabby Lanete and Rogemar Menor added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Red Lions became unstoppable midway in the second quarter as Menor and Lanete triggered a scoring rampage by combining eight straight points to pull off a 39-28 halftime edge.

Ekwe came up huge in the third period, scoring nine points – all And-1 baskets. His last three-point play provided the Red Lions a 69-50 advantage before closing the third with a 69-58 lead.

Again in the final quarter, San Beda College outscored the Growling Tigers, 34-24, to keep the lead for good.

Daryl Basa led UST with 25 points while teammates Jay-R Gaco and Carmelo Afuang had 13 points each.
