UNIVERSITY of the East, playing like a well-oiled machine, smothered lowly Philippine Christian University, 89-61, on Wednesday in the Fil-Oil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

The Red Warriors were virtually unstoppable from start to finish in claiming their first victory. The Dolphins their first setback in the tournament attended by 13 competitive schools.

“PCU’s morale is very low due to what happened to them,” said UE head coach Dindo Pumaren, referring to the one-year suspension imposed by the NCAA Policy Board last month due to identity-switching violation. “So we took it as an advantage.”

Guard Narciso Llagas erupted for 13 points and issued four assists to pace UE, while veteran guard Marcy Arellano poured in 12 points and shooting guard James Martinez chipped in for eight points.

Forwards Hans Thiele and Mark Fampulme contributed 11 points each and merged for 22 rebounds.

The UE Red Warriors outscored the Dolphins in the opening frame, where spitfire Mark Borboran, Fritz Bandaying and Val Acuna combined forces to make the first 17 points, to pull off an insurmountable 17-0 lead.

Arellano drilled in a triple and a short stab to keep a 25-15 spread with 6:45 left before halftime. The Red Warriors spoiled every rally of the Dolphins to keep them down with 34-25 at the half.

Llagas, who had eight points in the third period, fired two jumpers to provide UE its biggest of the ballgame, 62-31, with 4:31 left before the payoff frame began.

The PCU Dolphins of head coach Joel Dualan failed to narrow the gap as the Red Warriors imposed their unforgiving trapping defense all-throughout despite the huge advantage until the final buzzer.
