JRU posts back-to-back win

JOSE Rizal University grabbed win No. 2 yesterday with an impressive 71-63 victory over Mapua Institute of Technology in the elimination round of Fil-Oil-Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

Forward Marvin Hayes did everything valuable – scoring, rebounding, passing and playing tough defense – to put the Heavy Bombers on top of the leader board after winning its back-to-back assignments.

Hayes, 19, racked up 18 points, mostly in the shaded lane, collared 11 rebounds, issued six assists, rejected two cardinal attempts and had two steals to hand Mapua their first loss after prevailing over Ateneo in a double overtime tussle last Wednesday.

“I’m so glad the boys finally learned something from our first game,” said JRU head coach Ariel Vanguardia. “Despite our win in the first game, I told my players that I’m still really disappointed but today they prove themselves.”

John Wilson added 12 points and playmaker Mark Gagoco provided 11 points and dished out five assists also for the Heavy Bombers. While Sean Co and Hermes Sumalinog scored 11 points each for the Cardinals.

The Heavy Bombers were leading all-throughout the game after igniting a scorching 16-7 blast capped by three straight baskets of Hayes late in the second period. JRU closed the first half leading by 10-points, 33-23.

In the second half, Jose Rizal U kept its swarming defense to cripple the Cardinals’ offense forcing Mapua to commit four turnovers.

The Heavy Bombers posted their biggest lead of the game, 58-44, after Wilson ‘s basket with 34 seconds left in regulation and the Heavy Bombers never looked back.
