Blue Eagles downs Growling Tigers

It was some sort of a renewal from last years UAAP title series. But the Ateneo Blue Eagles came out on top of this one and managed to sneak part the UST growling Tigers, 67-60 of the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Invitational Tournament at the San Juan Arena.

The Blue Eagles took the initial lead of the contest in the 1st 5 minutes of action courtesy of Charles Tiu, Jefferson de Guzman and Christopher Sumalinog at 8-4. With Ateneo struggled from the 3-point area and UST applying a zone defense, the Growling Tigers were able to tie the score at 8-all with 3:55 minutes remaining of the 1st quarter via the efforts of Daryll Basa and Michael Parala.

But the Blue Eagles took control in the last two minutes of the quarter with a 5-0 blast, 14-8. Ateneo pressured the ball all the way until the buzzer to end the first 10 minutes of the game, 16-12.

In the 2nd quarter, Hector Badua, Carlos Penequito and and Basa each contributed from beyond the arc together with Carmelo Afuang’s free throws, ignited an 8-0 run for the Growling Tigers to give them the lead at 27-20 in more than 5 minutes of action. As the Growling Tigers continued their snipping from the 3-point area, the Blue Eagles kept coming with Yuri Escueta and Jobe Nkemakolem leading the charge. But UST hanged in there to close the 1st half to lead by 6, 37-31.

In the 3rd Quarter, the Blue Eagles opened up a 6-0 run starring Alec Rivera and Luis Gonzaga to tie the ballgame once again at 37-all. An exchange of baskets by both teams eventually led to another deadlock at 44-all with 4:05 minutes left before the end of the 3rd Quarter. With less than 3 minutes, the Blue Eagles kept the ball alive by tenaciously grabbing the offensive rebound but it was not enough to make UST loose the grip over their lead, 49-46 by3rd Quarter’s end.

In the 4th, De Guzman, Escueta and Quimson helped the Blue Eagles to tie the ballgame at 51-all and then at 53-all. Rivera, Paolo Dizon, Mark Intal and De Guzman fueled Ateneo’s surge in the last 5 minutes of regulation to keep them at the driver’s seat for good.
