Green Archers asserts superiority over the Red Lions

6 05 2007

At the beginning it was a dog fight between two former NCAA rivals. But San Beda had no answer and was unable to thwart off the De La Salle Green Archers onslaught, 97-84 at the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Invitational Tournament at the San Juan Arena.

In the 1st Quarter, with the Red Lions leading, Rico Maeirhoffer, Pocholo Villanueva and TY Tang help the Green Archers tied the ballgame at 8. But Tang ignited an 6-0 blast to give DLSU the lead 14-8 with 5:40 minutes remaining in the 1st Quarter. Sam Ekwe, Pong Escobal, Yousif Aljamal and JR Tecson kept the Red Lions within striking distance while exchanging baskets with Maeirhoffer, Simon Atkins, JV Casio and Allan Mangahas. But the Green Archers held a 3 point lead to close the first 10 minutes of action, 27-24.

In the 2nd Quarter, Red Lions point guard Borgy Hermida tied the ballgame at 37-all with a trey. Another basket exchange happened as Raymond Maggay and Gabby Lanete of SBC and Villanueva of DLSU contributed to provide the quarter’s next 2 deadlocks- 32-all and 34-all.

Slowly but surely increasing thier control of the ballgame, the Green Archers led by Tang and Maierhoffer, streaked towards a 9-point lead to close the 1st half of action, 52-43. Inspite of the Red Lions’ crew of Escobal, Aljamal and Ekwe (called for a questionable goal tending that led to a technical with 3:05 remaining) to keep SBC within striking distance as possible, still, the Green Archers answered with their continous effort on the offensive end.

In the 2nd half, Marko Batricevic opened the DLSU attack with a basket and a trey after 4 1/2 minutes of action with DLSU still leading, 57-51. But this is were the Green Archers major offensive bagan, Bader Malabes, Brian Ilad, Maierhoffer and espcially former Red Cub JV Casio literally scorched the Red Lions with a 17-0 blast to take a commanding 80-56 lead with 1:23 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter. Only Dave Marcelo and Ogie Menor contributed for the Red Lions in the final stretches of the quarter by splitting their Free Throws. DLSU will enter the final period with score of 80-58.

In the 4th Quarter, the Red Lions showed some life by cutting the lead down to 15-points courtesy of Ekwe, Aljamal and Escobal. But Casio, Tang and Maeirhoffer had all the answers as the Green Archers cruised all the way to a 13-point lead finish.
