Heavy Bombers now at 3-0

MARK Gagoco didn’t let the Dolphins stain the Heavy Bombers’ immaculate record.

Gagoco made a steal and converted it to a game-winning lay up for Jose Rizal University’s nerve-joggling 77-76 win over Philippine Christian University on Wednesday night in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational Cup.

Buoyed by the small crowd at the Arena in San Juan City, the Heavy Bombers got their three consecutive wins to stay on top of the standing while the Dolphins fell to 1-3 slate.

“It’s got to be the team’s effort to win despite the disadvantage we have,” said JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia, referring to a five-point deficit, 76-71, heading to the final 1:05. “My players have the desire to win and I’m satisfied with it.”

John Marion Wilson, who exploded for seven of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, sliced down the gap to 73-76 with 48 ticks remaining. Then Marvin Hayes took the offensive board and scored on a put-back with 29 seconds to come closer within 75-76.

The Dolphins tried to milk the clock, but the Heavy Bombers’ pesky defense caught them off-guard as Gagoco stole the ball off Liztian Amparado at mid-court with 11 seconds for the game-winning lay up.

Gagoco, who is playing with Toyota Otis in the PBL, marked a game-high 19 points and issued seven assists, while Marvin Hayes and Maui Pradas produced 11 points apiece to further solidify their quarterfinals hope.

Jose Rizal U started strong, outplaying the Dolphins in the first four minutes of action where Gagoco drilled in seven straight points to give the Heavy Bombers a 14-8 lead with 2:16 to go.
The Heavy Bombers managed to keep the lead despite the resistance of the Dolphins in the entire quarters.
