AFTER a sluggish first quarter performance, Letran College displayed tenacity in the next remaining moments of the ballgame to pull down University of the Philippines , 83-74, on Friday in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

The Knights, relying heavily on perimeter scoring and their trapping defense, grabbed their second win in four games to keep their quarterfinals hope while the Fighting Maroons fell to 0-2.

“They were too excited at first. I had to remind them this is a team game, they shouldn’t be making moves without looking at our set plays,” Letran head coach Louie Alas said. “I keep on reminding them to follow my instruction.”

Alas’ reprimand hit its target, as the Knights ended the first half with a 16-point margin, 54-38.

John Melegrito, who hit 15 points and dished out six assists, scored on a three-point play twice in the five-minute mark of the third period for a 70-53 count – Letran’s biggest lead of the entire game.

The Knights took an 11-point lead, 78-69, in the last quarter and they were never threatened from there.
