FAR Eastern University, the 2006 UAAP champs with newly-appointed mentor Glen Capacio debuted Wednesday with a huge win over Letran College, 91-77, in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City.

Inspired by their new head coach, the Tamaraws shook-off a sluggish first half to cruise to their first win in the tournament and deal the Knights their third setback in four games.

“I just asked them earlier to show what they got,” said Capacio, who replaced Bert Flores as head coach. “My players responded well to the challenges that Letran, as former NCAA champs, has the edge to beat us.”

Marnel Baracael fired 16 of his 22 points in the second half while forward Marlon Adolfo added 13 of his 16 points to help FEU outscore Letran in the last two quarters to win the game.

Mark Barroca and Ricardo Cawaling contributed 13 points apiece and Benedict Fernandez also had eight for FEU.

“My players are working double overtime because, of course, they are preparing for the UAAP,” Capacio said.

Knights’ RJ Jazul started hot, scoring the first eight points to give Letran an 8-0 lead in the first period. Rey Guevarra extended the lead at the end of the first quarter, 26-18, after scoring on a stab with four ticks left.

The Tamaraws fought back, with Barroca and Sanga hitting their stride, to cut down the deficit at the end of the half, 33-38.

Baracael and Cawaling joined forces down the last three minutes of the third period by scoring three baskets each to forge the first deadlock of the game, 53-all, with 1:23 to go before last quarter.

Then, FEU outscored Letran in the final 10 minutes of regulation, 34-20, to pull-off the come-from-behind win.
