Red Warriors waylays pesky Knights

13 05 2007

The UE REd Warriors just needed a scorching rally in the last quarter to deny pesky Letran College Knights a win, 93-87, on Sunday in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Knights attempted a big comeback to erase a 64-75 fourth quarter deficit but the Red Warriors’ toughness on the defensive end paid-off and eventually led them to their back-to-back victories. Letran College , with their current loss, now absorbed a 2-3 set-back.

Dino Daa, who had 24 points and 14 rebounds, scored on a put-back to forge a deadlock at 80-all with 5:12 left. Then added another jumper in the left flank for an 82-80 lead after 2 minutes.

But Fritz Bandaying and Mark Fampulme joined forces in the remaining four minutes to merge for an 18-5 blast to regain the lead and seal the victory.

Guard Narciso Llagas made nine of his 18 points in the third quarter, while Paul Lee added 13 points and Fampulme had 12.

James Martinez scored eight points including the backbreaking triples in the fourth period to earn UE a 90-81 lead with 2:13 remaining in regulation.

Rey Guevarra scored 21 points for Letran but he was scoreless in the final canto due to the Red Warriors’ trapping defense.

“I just want to give credit to our defense,” said UE mentor Dindo Pumaren. “It really helped us a lot in our campaign but we have to keep it.”
