18 05 2007

SOME fans say the Heavy Bombers’ successive wins were just a stroke of luck while others say it’s not yet the NCAA. Whatever others think, the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers don’t care.

Jose Rizal U strengthened its semifinals bid after registering a 5-0 slate with a narrow 78-76 win over Letran College Friday night in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

“There are some reactions about our winning streak but I’m reminding my players not to be bothered,” said JRU mentor Ariel Vanguardia. “All we need to do is to keep on playing and do our best.”

Forward Marvin Hayes pumped in 22 points, including the crucial stab that broke the 76-all deadlock with 1:49 left in the game, along with seven rebounds.

The Knights wasted four opportunities to win or it can send the game into overtime after missing all attempts due to the feisty defense imposed by the Heavy Bombers.

John Wilson added 14 points and had five assists, while Mark Gagoco fired three triples, hit two baskets from the field and one free throw for 14 points.

Letran College played impressively in the first three quarters but Jose Rizal U had the last laugh in the last quarter.

John Melegrito, who scored 11 points, scored on two fast break lay-ins for the Knights’ 23-11 spread with seconds to go before the end of the second quarter. They also extended the lead to 43-34 at the half after RJ Jazul finished with four straight baskets also in the 2nd.

The Heavy Bombers tied the game to 60-all but Jazul, who paced the Knights with 20 points, scored on a three-point play to close the third period at 63-60.

Wilson ’s four free throws in the final three minute mark tied the game to 76-all. And then the timely heroics from Hayes made it the game winner for the Knights.
