Sean Co saved the Cardinals

18 05 2007

It seems that Sean Co is doing everything for the Cardinals.

He scored 20 points, took down 13 rebounds, swatted away two Fighting Maroons attempts, hustled for possessions thrice and dished out four assists for Mapua Institute of Technology’s 83-76 win over winless University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons.

The pesky Cardinals, inspired by some supporters at the Arena in San Juan City on Friday, were able to level their mark to 2-2 in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup after getting that important win.

“I’m trying everything to win each game although I’m not aware of the stats,” said Co, who shot a long two for the Cardinals’ 79-72 lead with 1:42 left in the game. “Funny thing is my teammates are also doing the same.”

After hitting four more free throws in the final minute, the Cardinals only needed to milk the clock to give the Fighting Maroons their third straight defeat.

Co got the needed lift from teammates Kelvin Dela Peña, who made 14 points and issued eight assists, and Neil Pacual had 12 points and collected seven rebounds.

Trailing 23-25 and 40-44 in the first two periods, Mapua shifted its gars as Co delivered seven points including the go-ahead three-point play with 2:19 minutes to go and tasted the lead for the first time in the ballgame, 50-48, in third quarter.

The Cardinals completely took the entire payoff period, outscoring the Fighting Maroons, 19-14, to seal the win.

“My players are playing inspired because some supporters arrived,” said Leo Isaac, the team’s newly-appointed coach replacing Horacio Lim. “Co, Peña and Pascual worked very hard to win the game, so they really deserved my credit.”
