The Bulldogs strike back despite ugly game

NATIONAL University Bulldogs toughened up from its sluggish performance to hang on to a 78-75 win over University of Perpetual Help Dalta System Altas Friday in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

After being fouled accidentally fouled from the three-point line, Jonathan Fernandez tested his free throw shooting skills to hit three straight points with only five ticks remaining to get over the hump at 75-all and steal the victory.

“I have to give credit to Jon because of his aggression to win this game,” said Manny Dandan, the Bulldogs mentor. “I’m just hoping my players will maintain their performance.”

Fernandez finished with 24 points while Dave Catamora added 13 points and former San Sebastian College forward Ryan Aguilar chipped in 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to their third win after four games.

The Bulldogs squandered a 17-8 second quarter lead after the Altas unleashed a blitzing 15-3 run. Capped by four consecutive baskets of Reyes and two free throws from Kong, to seize the edge, 37-33, with 54 ticks before halftime.

Ronald Reyes, who led Perpetual with 19 points, scored two baskets to give the Altas a 66-60 advantage but couldn’t hold on to the lead good as the Bulldogs kept the game at a jabbing pace.

The Bulldogs took a 75-71 lead in the final 2:16 minutes of regulation, but point guard Michael Kong of the Altas scored twice on lay ups to put the game to a 75-all deadlock with 1:19 to go before Fernandez was fouled on the act of shooting from beyond the arc. Perpetual Help now on a 1-2 slate in this series.
