Knights nip Altas, keep Quarterfinal bid alive

LETRAN College banked on the endgame heroics of RJ Jazul to nip University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 71-69, yesterday in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

Jazul, who paced the Knights with 18 points and seven rebounds, scored a pivotal stab with 1:12 to go in the payoff period to shatter the 69-all deadlock.

“We haven’t been playing defense most of the time, but this game is very interesting in terms of defense,” said long-time Knights head coach Alas. “I also credit Jazul for that crucial shot.”

The Knights forced the Altas to become scoreless in the remaining minutes to seal the win and improve their standings to 3-4 while Perpetual dropped to 1-2.

The Altas took a 22-28 halftime lead after Rico Lee and Raffy Layon merged for 12 points in the last 2:16 before the end of the half.

Although the Altas ignited a 6-0 run in the 3rd Quarter, the Knights were able to keep the game in jabbing distance via the Free Throw line courtesy of Clarence Foronda, Andro Quinday and Jazul who continously attacked the basket at will. With 1:36 left in the 3rd, the Knight ignited its own run (5-0) but the Altas was able to keep its nose above water, 53-50 by quarter’s end.

With the Knights trailing by 5 with after 3 1/2 minutes of action in the 4th, Letran turned on the heat with another run (6-0) to closed the gap at 63-60 to eventually tie the game at 65-all with less than 3 minutes left. Altas’ Michael Kong and Foronda kept them going down the stretch. But the Altas failed to adjust its defense to the Knights’ relentless paint job as Jazul, Quinday and Foronda took advantage and delivered the goods for Letran in the closing seconds of regulation. Quinday scored 11 points and Bryan Faundo had eight points for Letran.

With the win, Letran College had bounced back from a frustrating 76-78 loss to Jose Rizal University Friday night to keep its quarterfinals bid alive.

The Heavy Bombers stayed on the No. 1 spot with a league-leading 5-0 mark. Ralf Layon led Perpetual Help with 22 points.
