FOR University of the East, pride is one of its main instruments to keep on winning.

The Red Warriors shook-off a sluggish first half scoring to hack-out a come-from-behind 76-72 win over the National University Bulldogs Sunday in the Fil-Oil Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

With UE trailing 25-14 in the first period and 34-37 at the half featuring excellent perimeter shooting from Cyrus Malagueno and Jay Jahnke, the UE Red Warriors showed enough pride in the next two quarters to keep its unbeaten slate at 3-0 while National University falls to 3-2.

“I told them during the halftime break that we need to keep our pride in this league especially to our UAAP co-team member,” said Dindo Pumaren, the Red Warriors’ mentor. “I’m glad they take and answer the challenges well.”

Lanky Hans Thiele, who produced 16 points and collected 10 rebounds, delivered a three-point play to knot the count to 44-all with 8:31 to go in the third period.

The Bulldogs regained the lead for awhile, 48-44, with 5:12 left there, but the Red Warriors were unstoppable particularly Thiele scoring two more baskets to tie the count again, 48-all, with still 4:09 to go.

James Martinez, who only had seven points, split his free throws with seconds to spare, before the start of the payoff period, gave the Red Warriors a one point lead, 58-57.

Jorel Canizares, who scored 13 points, sank both free throws for UE’s 74-72 lead with a minute left. Bulldogs’ Jankhe then muffed a go-ahead triple in the ensuing play. Then Mark Borboran secured the board with 35 seconds remaining.

With seconds to spare for one more play for the Red Warriors, James Martinez was left wide open for a dagger triple from the left wing that sealed the win for UE. Cyrus Malagueño, who paced NU with 23 points, was blocked by Borboran in the dying seconds.

Mark Borboran and Neil Llagas chipped in nine points apiece for the Red Warriors. While Ryan Aguilar and Jonathan Fernandez had 17 and 15 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
