UNIVERSITY of the East relied on its high-octane performance down the stretch to score a 98-78 routing of University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday in the FIL-OIL Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

With four players having a field day and scoring in double figures, the Red Warriors cruised to their four consecutive win to assure them of a quarterfinal berth while the Growling Tigers fell to 2-4.

“I just told them to give their best or nonetheless we’re not going to get this win,” said UE mentor Dindo Pumaren. “My players responded like a hungry animal from the start and finish the game.” Coach Pumaren shuffled his players via a platoon substitution, experimenting a variety of combinations, which would work well for them for the coming UAAP season and which are probably the most efficient line-up.

Power forward Kelvin Gregorio paced the Red Warriors with 18 points and nine boards, while Elmer Espiritu scored 15 and collected 12 rebounds, and guard-forward Joer Canizares had 11 and Bryan Fampulme finished with 10.

Marcy Arellano, who finished with six points, ignited a 14-0 blast in the first five minutes to give the Red Warriors a 14-0 lead. UE added a 9-7 burst in the remaining minutes to close the first quarter ahead, 23-7.

The Red Warriors maintained the lead in the second quarter after the Growling Tigers committed quite a number of turnovers. UE outscored them, 31-28, to close the half at 54-35.

UST tried to cut the deficit but only managed to reach 11 points at the end of the third period, 63-74. UE completely took away the lead for good, outscoring them even in the payoff quarter, 24-15. Bryan Afuang led UST with 22 points and Daryl Basa had 17.
