Bulldogs reaches quarterfinals, rallies past Tams

The NATIONAL University Bulldogs regained its winning form by beating the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 73-69, Friday to join De La Salle University and University of the East in the quarterfinal round of the Fil-Oil Flying V invitational preseason cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

The Bulldogs banked on a fourth quarter explosion of playmaker Jay Jahnke, who scored all 15 points in the payoff to erase a 52-56 third quarter deficit en route to improving their record to 4-2.

Forward Mike Salvado, Jewel Ponferada and Ryan Aguilar added 18 points, nine and eight points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.

“I can’t say anything but praise my players for showing their consistent game and proving our victories were no fluke,” said NU mentor Manny Dandan. “We learned from our lost to UE and I’m hoping this victory will give us hope.”

The Tamaraws absorbed their three straight setbacks for a 2-3 record. Rowel Cawaling paced FEU with 18 points.
Jahnke scored on a triple with 5:17 left in the last quarter for the Bulldogs’ 63-61 lead.

The Tamaraws engaged in a grind it out the game tried to keep it close until Jahnke’s second triple with 1:34 left shattered the 69-all deadlock.

Defense proved to be the Bulldogs’ main weapon for this game as they held the Tamaraws scoreless in the remaining seconds. Ryan Aguilar’s split free throw with five ticks left completely sealed the win for NU.

NU 73: Salvado 18, Jahnke 15, Ponferada 9, Malagueño 8, Aguilar 8, Berry 5, Baloran 4, Luy 1.

FEU 69: Cawaling 18, Baracael 14, Cabagnot 8, Gerilla 8, Fernandez 8, Barroca 4, Cervantez 4, Sanga 3, Ramos 2.

Quarter scores: 15-18, 32-36, 52-56, 73-69
