Cardinals 5 upsets Tams

FIVE hard-fighting Mapua Institute of Technology players scored in double-figures en route to an inspiring 78-69 win over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws Wednesday night in the FIL-OIL Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

The Cardinals, leaning on a huge fourth quarter explosion, outscored the Tamaraws there, 19-13, to claim third win to improve to 3-2 mark.

“It’s all about teamwork,” said newly-appointed Cardinals head coach Leo Isaac. “I’m emphasizing team work every game and it’s really impressive to see your team doing it each game.” FEU fell to 2-4.

Fil-Canadian point guard Kelvin Dela Peña, who currently playing for Cebuana Lhuiller, produced 16 points and issued five assists, including the assist to Mark Anthony Acosta’s lay up with 7:10 left in the payoff frame that gave them a 66-64 lead.

Acosta and Teree Gil Guillermo finished with 11 apiece, while forward Neil Pascual added 10 points. Guard Sean Co, who finished with 14 points, delivered seven points in the third quarter, including back-to-back jumpers early in the third period for a 41-37 spread.

Down by 17-21 at the end of the first quarter, Mapua fought gallantly to keep the game in striking distance and forge a 37-all deadlock by halftime.

The Cardinals got a 57-52 lead before the payoff frame as Dela Peña knocked down a triple with 50 ticks to go. From there, Mapua was never threatened. Michael Baracael paced FEU with 15 points.
