Tamaraws whips Growling Tigers

The Far Eastern University Tamaraws outplayed the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 84-57 in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Invitational Tournament at the Arena in San Juan.

The Tamaraws started out with Mark Barroca, Archie Reyes, Sanny Abaring, Marnel Baracael and Ricardo Cawaling. For the Growling Tigers, they went with Daryll Basa, Soriano, Hector Badua, Carmelo Afuang and Carlos Penequito.

In the 1st quarter, applying pressure in every UST possession, FEU raced to a 9-point advantage, 14-5 half-way thru the 1st. FEU again ignited another run (8-0) to put them ahead in double figures, 22-7 with 1:44 remaining courtesy of Jens Knuttel, Alfredo Gerilla and Benedict Fernandez. The Growling Tigers only had one contributor in Eric de la Cruz in the final stretch of the quarter. The 1st 10 minutes of action ended with FEU leading by 17-points, 26-9.

In the 2nd quarter, the Growling Tigers surprised the Tamaraws with their own version of a hard nosed defensive pressure and help ignite a 13-0 run. Led by Marlowe Reveresa, Florante Salazar and Hector Badua, UST was able to close the gap to within 5-points, 29-24 with 3 minutes remaining. But Baracael retaliated with Back to Back baskets to give FEU a 9-point cushion, 33-24 entering the 2nd half.

In the 3rd quarter, the Tamaraws, led by Gerilla, Cawaling and Baracael, attacked the UST defense and fired another run (8-0) and hand UST a 23-point deficit by the end of the 3rd, 55-32.

In the last 10 minutes of regulation, FEU again ignited an even bigger run at 12-0 to put them on top by 26-points, 80-54 with less than 2 minutes remaining. The Tamaraws had a cruising victory from there.
