UST dealt Jose Rizal University its first loss with a close 96-92 win in the last day of the elimination round of FIL-OIL Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

The Growling Tigers, the UAAP defending champion, banked on their consistent free throw shooting in the closing seconds to withstand the Heavy Bombers’ late rally en route to a 2-5 record.

“We still outsmarted them although we squandered our huge lead,” said UST mentor Pido Jarencio. “Anyway, this league served us as our preseason preparation for our title-retention drive in the UAAP.”

Abner Afuang and Hector Badua led the Tigers’ onslaught, making 23 and 17 points, respectively. Daryl Basa and Ray Scott had 14 points apiece.

University of Santo Tomas waxed hot in the opening frame as it took a 26-21 lead and turned it to a 45-36 halftime edge.

Badua’s jumper with 8:14 to go in the final frame gave UST its biggest lead, 76-54, but JRU refused to roll over and die.

The Heavy Bombers unleashed a scorching 26-4 attack to come up within 74-80 with 3:12 to go. They also trimmed down the gap to only 92-90 with 50 ticks left but they succumbed to errors in the ensuing plays. The two free throws each of Afuang and Penequito sealed the win.
