Bulldogs outlasts Knights

4 06 2007

The NU Bulldogs made minced meat with their new victims – the Letran Knights.
NU out-hustled Letran, 66-74, at the FilOil flying V Pre-Season Invitational at the Arena in San Juan.

In the 1st quarter, the Letran Knights took control of the ball game early to surge for 11-0 run, 13-4 after 4 minutes of action with reymar Gutiban, RJ Jazul, Alvyn Cabonce and Bryan Faundo leading the way. The quarter ended with the Knight on top, 25-17 before 2 successive runs in a 3 minute span (4-0 and 5-0). Cyrus Malagueno’s back to back triples at the close of the quarter and help from Joseph Lingao- Lingao and Jewel Ponferada fueled NU’s bid in the 1st 10 minutes of action.

In the 2nd Quarter, Coach Manny Dandan gathered his troops. The Bulldogs, thru the inspired play of Marvin Boloran and Jay Jahnke and Jessie Garcia unleashed a 9-0 run that eventually turned a possible blowout to a legitimate ballgame. NU inched closer with a 3-pt. deficit, 33-30 with 5:16 minutes left before the close of the 1st half. The rally was made possible by Coach Dandan’s continuous double teaming of the ball carrier. At the end of the 1st half, the game went into its 2nd deadlock at 37-all with Jessie Garcia hitting a buzzer beater trey.

In the 3rd Quarter, after its 4th deadlock at 43-all, the Bulldogs ignited an 8-0, this time with Chris Catamora and Mike Salbado at the helm, to take the drivers seat, 51-43 with 3:19 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter. The quarter ended with NU leading by 8-points, 55-47.

In the 4th Quarter, the Bulldogs aggressively attacked the basket and made their trips to the Free Throw line their staple for a 3 minute 9-0 run and stretch NU’s lead to 22-points, 73-51. Catamora, Ponferada and Malagueno split their trips to the line with the exception of Mervin Boloran. With 3:25 minutes to go in regulation, the Knights stood firm and limited the Bulldogs’ dribbling space on the floor. Shuebert Reposar, Dino Daa and Jazul took advantage of NU’s turnovers and answered with a 14-0 run to trim their deficit to 8-points, 73-65 before finally bowing out to the Bulldogs.
