DE La Salle University is just as awesome like never been before.

The Green Archers bucked a lethargic fourth quarter performance to subdue the Mapua Cardinals, 95-90, on Monday and enter to the final four of the FIL-OIL Flying V preseason invitational cup at the Arena in San Juan City .

Behind the intimidating presence of Rico Maierhofer and the scoring skills of Mangahas, the La Salle Green Archers rallied from a short-deficit to eliminate all hopes of the Cardinals in making it to the final four.

Guard James Mangahas, an ex-Baby Dolphins, scored 20 points, drilled in two key baskets in the last two minutes of final period including a jumper with 1:05 left to give the Green Archers a 92-90 lead.

“I can’t even take a shot early in the game but I keep on trying then finally making the shots that mattered most,” said Mangahas, who topped the game with three impressive three-point plays.

Guard Jayvee Casio, who made 19 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the three-point area, sealed the win after hitting the last three free throws for La Salle in the last 39 seconds.

“We didn’t allow them to keep the advantage,” said La Salle coach Franz Pumaren. “We pressured them until we pushed them to the brink. It’s good also that my players were still fighting despite struggling most of the way.”

La Salle just finished 47-out-of-92 total field goals. Rico Maierhofer added 17 points and 12 rebounds while Tyrone Tang had 12 and dished out eight assists.

After taking a 31-21 lead, the Green Archers were outscored by the Cardinals as guard Kelvin Dela Peña, who led Mapua with 26 points, ignited a 14-2 run capped by his six points for Mapua to seize the count at halftime, 48-47.

Mapua had a good third quarter game but couldn’t hang on in the final period to win the game.
