Red Lions thwarted the Heavy Bombers

The San Beda Red Lions faced its first ever league test for this upcoming NCAA season. The Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers on the other hand a reality check. But the Heavy Bombers must not be taken lightly. The Red Lions pushed the Heavy Bombers limits as they prevailed, 89-84 at the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Invitational Tournament held at the Arena in San Juan.

In the 1st Quarter, the Red Lions courtesy of Ogie Menor, Gabby Lanete, Yousif Aljamal, Pong Escobal and Sam Ekwe, sparked a 8-0 run to take a 5-point lead, 12-7 after 7 minutes of play. But Mark Cagoco, Rene Cunanan and James Sena answered the Red Lions with a 7-0 run to take the drivers seat all the way to the end of the 1st quarter with the Heavy Bombers leading by 4-points, 19-15.

It was a dog fight in the 2nd quarter. The Red Lions moved ahead by 4-points, 23-19 with 7:53 minutes left in the 1st half. John Wilson, Ildefonso Bungahis traded baskets with Lanete, Aljamal and Escobal and both teams stamped 2 deadlocks at the 7th minute mark of the quarter at 32-all and at 34-all.

Just under 2 minutes, Maui Pradas, Raymond Kabigting and John Wilson combined forces to give JRU a single point advantage, 37-36. However, it was not long until Menor and Aljamal replied that put the lead back to the Red Lions, 40-38 within the final moments of the 1st half.

With JRU’s Cunanan tying the ball game at 40-all, the last possession resulted in a foul off Jason Nocom with San Beda in penalty. With no time remaining, Jason Nocom converted both free throws and the Heavy Bombers took the lead at halftime, 42-40.

In the 2nd half, after 2 deadlocks at 42 and 44-all, the Red Lions went on a scoring rampage. 1st with a 5-0 run and then an 8-0 run in a span of 4 ½ minutes. San Beda surged ahead with a 14-point lead by the end of the 3rd Quarter, 70-56.

In the final frame, Wilson, Marvin Hayes, Sena, Cagoco and Bungahis ignited a 10-0 run to cut San Beda’s lead to just 1, 79-78. A goal tending violation by Ekwe off a shot by Wilson threatened the lead again of San Beda, 81-80 less than 2 minutes of regulation.

But the Red Lions won’t be denied as Escobal and Menor showed poise down the stretch to cap the win for San Beda.

Relax mga Bedans, pre sesason games lang yan. We should be more hungry this season since every team in the NCAA (and UAAP hehe) are gunning for us. Keep the faith!
