NCAA 83 Preview: SSC-R, Mapua, UPHSD

18 06 2007

Who will dethrone San Beda? All coaches agree that the Red Lions is the team to beat this NCAA 83 in a press conference held at the ABS-CBN Building. San Beda has been given the hands down 1st seed rating and go all the way to the finals. But who’s the worthy opponent? Who knows, this is college basketball, and anything can still happen. Let’s take a look at the 1st three teams.

San Sebastian College Recoletos – STAGS

Season 82 Averages:

2PT%: 43%, 3PT%: 24%, FG%: 65%, FT%: 38%, Rebounds: 41.4, Assists: 11.7, Blocks: 4.9, Steals: 4.6 ,Turnovers: 23.4

Line Up:

Gone are: Jose Carlo Juan, Miguel Lindaya, Sylvester Sagad, John Carlo Tiuseco and Redentor Vicente.
Additions: Guards – Vergel Zulueta, Richard de la Cruz, Roland Anthony Del Rio Forwards – Froilan Saquillo, Jr. and Alrin Umali.
Still there: Guards – Juanito Quiamco, Franz Delgado, John Murphy Raymundo, Forwards – Jimbo Aquino, Jim Bruce Viray, Dave Najorda, Gilbert Bulawan
Centers – Francis de Leon, Omar Moses Mujahid Ampatuan and Jason Ballesteros.

Head Coach: Jorge Gallent
Assistant Coaches: Jolly Escobar, Raymond Valenzona

For me, this is a team that must not be taken lightly. With a winning coach like Jorge Gallent, this team is automatically has a warning sign written all over it. This team has balance. They can score from inside and out. And has the side that can match up with anyone in the league. Jason Ballesteros, Jim Viray Francis de Leon and Franz Delgado form a veteran core of players that can instill toughness.

The Stags believe that they have a great system and when they say they will compete, everybody must take their word for it.

Mapua Institute of Technology – CARDINALS

Season 82 Averages:

2Pt%: 42%, 3Pt%: 22%, FG%: 60%, FT% 35%, Rebs: 41.6, Assists: 13.9, Blks: 3.4, Steals: 6, Turnovers: 19.8

Gone are: Joferson Gonzales, Gilbert Migraso, Jason Pascual, Raymond Tiongco, Gino Virata.
Additions: Guards – Jonathan Banal, Edwin Cornejo, Arjay del rosario and Rodel Raneses, Forward – Joshua Emmanuel Reyes.

Still there: Guards – Sean Co, Kelvin de La Pena, Teree Guillermo, Jewel Palomique, Forwards – Mark Anthony Acosta, Paul Alexis Cinco, Ian Mazo and Hernes Sumalinog
Centers – Jerby del Rosario and Neil Pascual.

Head Coach: Leo Isaac

Coach Leo Isaac tried to downplay his chances, but I personally believe that the Cardinals can really make it hard for any team who steps into the court with them. Having fun in a competitive environment will make it easy for the Cardinals to adjust to Coach Leo’s system. After all, they have a rookie point guard in Jonathan Banal backing up Arjay del Rosario or Sean Co.

Kelvin de la Pena will be Mapua’s main weapon. He is versatile and can defend skillfully defend the perimeter. Mark Acosta, Neil Pascual and Jerby del Rosario might form the smallest frontline in the league but they can be used for screen and roll options to help create space for themselves.

University of Perpertual Help System – DALTA

Season 82 Averages:

2PT%: 39%, 3PT%: 32%, FG%: 36%, FT%: 62%, Rebounds: 37, Assists: 14.6, Blocks: 4.6, Steals: 6, Turnovers: 22

Gone are: Jay Jay Aransazo, Conrad Bauzon, Alwin Manalang, Daryl Maendoza, Khiel Misa, Riomar Perturbos and Joseph Racho.

Additions: Guards -, Andy Mejos, Richard Mojado, Franz Dysam, Forwards – Raffy Ynion and George Sicat, Centers – Rommel Balboa, Nathaniel Salanga, Thoyib Isman, Ryan Frebyan.

Still there: Guards – Ronald Reyes, Sang Myeon Lee, Christian Flavio, Michael Kong, John Galabin, Forwards – Vladymir Joe and Virgilio Manuel, Jr..

Head Coach: Arturo “Bai” Cristobal
Assistant Coach: Conrado M. Pasco

Raw players on the outside but definitely a team loaded with size. With the additions of Indonesians – Thoyib Isman and Ryan Frebyan plus Rommel Balboa, they could complement Vladimir Joe to make up an interchangeable frontline. Isman’s exposure in the Flying V Preseason showed limited minutes, limited post-move options in and around the paint but has a sweet touch at the Free Throw line.

With Misa and Bauzon gone, the Altas will rely on Korean designated shooter, Sang Myeon Lee and Michael Kong in the perimeter. Quarterbacking them will definitely be by committee namely, ronald Reyes and Andy Mejos. Coach Cristobal definitely puts a premium in execution and will make interior offense its 1st option. But when the opportunity comes, look for the Altas to score early in transition.

i think the only team in tose three that can make the final four is san sebastian. mapua did not improve their rosters which i think is too small and will lack in offense. perpetual is too raw. they almost have a complete line up changed. misa and bauzon is gone and they have no one to carry them come game time. san sebastian has a pretty good chance. they have a new experienced coach in goerge gallent and a very tall line up. a balance of new and old players plus jim viray has became tougher. but still san beda will win. ANIMO SAN BEDA!

Of the 3, imo, only Mapua will make the F4. They may not be very tall, but that is no different from last year. Let’s be reminded they they gave SBC the scare in the semis. With the “positive demeanor” of Isaac at the sidelines, the players need not be worried of what expletives they will hear from their coach when they commit mistakes. The veterans can only play better with Isaac at the helm. That is enough to make it to the semis.

SSC-R. Too shallow PG rotation. Big men Ballesteros and De Leon are not intimidating. So, mahina sa ibabaw, malambot sa ilalim. Sinong matatakot sa kanila? Gallent may be a good coach, pero wala naman siyang materyales to work on.

UPHR. The big men have the size. Period. This team will only go as high as their conversion from the perimeter. If they don’t connect, you can forget them. At isa pa itong si Cristobal na malakas makainsulto ng pagkatao ng players niya. Magaling kung magaling, but I doubt if he can bring out the best out of his players.

i think, mas magkakaroon na ng laban kahit konti ang mga opponents ng san beda sa season 83. lahat kasi may mga changes na nangyari.. for san beda, i bet kung hindi napalitan si coach koy, pwde maging 12-0 win-loss ng red lions sa elimninations(tulad nung last season) and 3-0 sa finals..
