This is the theme of 83rd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) host Jose Rizal University when it plunges to action in the oldest collegiate basketball league on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.

JRU athletic director Paul Supan said the school’s goal is to win the championship. He said the school was also the host back in 1972 when it won its last title. And being the host again this year, the JRU community wants nothing less than the basketball title.

“The mindset is to continue to improve,” said Supan. “We’re a university now. We want to improve in all aspects – academics, in faculty development, facilities and we’re building a sports complex, which will house all the indoor games.”

Heavy Bombers mentor Ariel Vanguardia said he is continuing the process of becoming JRU better every day and transform the Bombers into the best team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

“The last time the school became champion was in 1972 – the year I was born,” said Vanguardia. “This year, I believe, we have a very good chance. First, we have to make it to the Final Four, then the Finals. After that, anything can happen.”

Vanguardia is a coaching veteran who has worked not only in the collegiate ranks but also in professional leagues, such as the Metropolitan Basketball Association, the PBL and the PBA.

“It’s very difficult to handle collegiate teams,” he said. “It’s very unlike the pros. You can’t pick from a lot of players. Here (in collegiate league) you are the one to recruit players from high school and you have to teach all.”

Vanguardia will rely on veterans John Wilson, Maui Pradas, Marvin Hayes, Jason Nocom, Alvin Se, MS Yuzon, Mark Seña and Mark Cagoco.

New players include Jojo Cunanan, Raycon Kabigting, Carlo Lituania, JR Bulangis, Je Agas, Jerome Cruz, Jerome Ramos, John Montemayor and Joel Gabriel.

Vanguardia said he monitors his players’ grades and even gave them lessons in personality development.

“I don’t just teach basketball,” said Vanguardia. “I want my players to improve as persons. I will help them become better basketball players, better students and better, more confident individuals.”

Vanguardia said after San Beda College, the race is wide open. The goal is to earn the second finals slot which he believes is attainable. The other teams to watch are Letran College , Mapua and College of St. Benilde .

The first time I saw Vanguardia coach the Bombers, they were mangled by the Red Lions by 30pts. But he was not even three weeks into handling the team.

After a year, ibang-iba na ang team na ito!

This is a well-motivated team. Collectively they believe they have what it takes to win the title and end their 35-year drought. Completo sa tao sa bawat posisyon. The core of the team is centered on just 8 players. But Vanguardia knows how to use his bench. Infact, hardly did anyone notice that about half of the team will be playing in their first NCAA season. Because in all these pre-season events, Vanguardia has done a good job of utilizing his bench.

If this team has one weakness though, imo, yung “gigil”.

They are just so determined and wanting to win, they just play with too much emotion. But how can they relax when their own coach is himself very emotional in his demeanor during games?

Huwag pairalin yung emotions. Relax. Dapat mangibabaw ang diskarte.

Remember, games are not won on grunts, breast thumping or fist clenching. You have to execute at every possession and play honest at the other end until the final buzzer sounds. That’s true for EVERY game.
