JOSE Rizal University is for real.

The Heavy Bombers proved Wednesday that they weren’t the league’s whipping boys anymore when they nipped the San Sebastian Golden Stags, 68-66, to claim their first victory in second game in 83rd NCAA men’s basketball at the Arena in San Juan City .

Ahead by 67-66 with 1:37 left, Jay Nocom’s split free throw off Gilbert Bulawan’s foul increased the Heavy Bombers’ advantage with 31.5 seconds left.

San Sebastian’s forward Jimbo Aquino, however, missed a three-pointer with 13.3 ticks then Maui Pradas blocked Jason Ballesteros’ potential game-tying put-back with eight ticks left and point guard Mark Gagoco secured the ball with a rebound.

The win redeemed the Bombers’ 69-91 opening loss to defending champion Red Lions last Saturday.

“This is an eye-opener that we are not good enough yet. I hope we could pick up our games as the season progress,” sophomore JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia told inboundpass.

“Honestly after our horrendous loss in the opening day I had a sleepless night because of our label of being a title contender. So I asked them to be themselves.”

Nocom and Marvin Hayes finished with 14 points apiece and James Sena had 10 points and five boards.

Bulawan paced the Stags with 16 points, eight rebounds and two blocks while John Raymundo also made his presence felt by chipping in 10 markers.

Dana Lituania scored a jump shot to give JRU a 15-10 cushion with less than a minute before the first quarter ended.

San Sebastian had an 11-0 streak to go ahead, 30-22. However, Jose Rizal countered to remain close, 28-30, at halftime.

The Heavy Bombers uncorked a blistering 12-0 run, capped by Mark Cagoco’s five straight points to taste their highest lead, 54-43, with 2:21.

Bulawan scored a basket and the JRU bench forced to call a timeout, 3:57 remaining, 61-62.

John Agas retaliated with a three-pointer from the assist of John Wilson. A few minutes later, Jim Viray made a trey to give the Golden Stags a 66-65 lead with 1:59 left.

The game had 3 deadlocks and 11 exciting leadchanges. JRU’s bench combined for 41 points while SSC-R’s bench had 26 points.
