Coach Ariel says “let’s be ourselves”

28 06 2007

FOUR days after they absorbed a horrible loss against the reigning champ, the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers of coach Ariel Vanguardia came back strong last Wednesday to hang on in a close 68-66 win over San Sebastian College .

It looks like Vanguardia’s soldiers are determined this time around. Actually, the JRU Heavy Bombers were really hustling for loose balls and their aggression in an upstream mode despite the mounting pressure gien to them for 40 minutes of basketball action.

I lift my wine glass to Maui Pradas, who block the potential game-tying basket of big man Jason Ballesteros with seconds to go in regulation, and Jay Nocom, who had three crucial free throws in the final two minutes. The call to action by these two players gave JRU its first win in two outings.

Just a piece of advice which I heard from Vanguardia that practically motivated the team. He told his players to forget being a contender and just be their normal self to ease of the burden.

Vanguardia also told me that he had sleepless nights after losing to San Beda in the opener and doubted if they were ever competitive enough.

And in my own opinion, the team admitted that they had problems dealing with the pressure of being a contender. They have accepted the fact that as a team, they have to start from the bottom and slowly bring it up to become successful.

With this victory, I’m sure host JRU will go far on its basketball campaign.

Maybe they could go on a trip to the final four or even in the finals to claim all the way thier 72k back to 2k7.

It was a welcome sound for JRU athletic director Paul Supan and school president Arman Fabella. But who knows? Of course, only somebody from above knows.

I am very sure Coach Ariel is always here to push the confidence of his players. His wisdom as a coach and mentor to his players will spell the word “win” for them.

More victories to come Coach Ariel and Good luck my friend…

Actually, JRU is a team that boasts it so- called “hardwork” attitude. Lacking in talent they have to do it by sheer will. JRU can definitly do damage but i believe they were overwhelmed by San Beda’s awesome basketball talent. Who knows that shock and awe they experienced in the opening might just be a ghost. After all this is College Basketball and anything is possible.
