SBC routs Perpetual without Ekwe in last 15 minutes

29 06 2007

SAM has finally lost his temper, but the Red Lions remain victorious. Reigning champion San Beda College, bucking the absence of Sam Ekwe, routed University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 86-62, on Friday for its second straight win in the 83 rd NCAA men’s basketball at the Arena in San Juan City.

The last year’s 6-foot-8 MVP was ejected with five minutes left in the third after kicking the 5-foot-11 Korean Lee Sang Myeon, who shoved Ekwe in mid-air during an alley-hoop play.

“That’s very dangerous and maybe could kill me,” said Ekwe, referring to Lee’s hard foul. Ekwe finished with 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. “Well, I regret what i did but nobody can blame me.”

Despite the loss of Ekwe, San Beda College stayed consistent all-throughout particularly Rogemar Menor, Bam Gamalinda and Yousef Aljamal dictated the tone throughout the rout and sealed the Lions their second lopsided victory in a row.

“My players have stepped up especially my reserves,” said SBC coach Frankie Lim. “I have talented players, so it wasn’t hard for us.” After SBC rolled to a 12-0 start, it was just a matter of formally finishing the game. The first time Perpetual scored it was already 3:16 in the first quarter.

The hurting continued in the second quarter as the Red Lions padded the lead some more, 43-24, by halftime.

The wounded Menor, a former NCAA junior’s MVP who sustained a minor cut on his forehead, fired a team-high 15 points including seven quick points in the first quarter. Gamalinda had 11 points, while Aljamal came up with 10 and John Tecson and Pong Escobal contributed eight points apiece.

Perpetual tried to mount an endgame rally, going on a 10-3 run anchored on Ronald Reyes. But the closest the Altas could get to was at 55-70, with 5:56 left.

Guard Mike Kong led Perpetual with 18 points, while Ronald Reyes made 14 and Flavio Liaz had 11. The three combined for 8/21 at the three-point area, but the Altas were badly out-rebounded, 32-56.

The unsportsmanlike conduct cost Ekwe a possible second straight MVP plum and a one-game suspension on their next game against the winless but tough Mapua Cardinals (0-2).

“Ekwe is suspended based on our constitution and by-laws,” said NCAA Management Committee chair Paul Supan of Jose Rizal. “He’ll also be ineligible for any individual award for his behavior.”

“We are looking at the possibility of playing without Ekwe in our next game. We’ll just have to do what we have to do,” he said.
“There’s a lot at stake, we can’t afford to make mistakes like that,” said Lim.

The individual scores:

San Beda 86- Menor 15, Gamalinda 11, Ekwe 10, Aljamal 10, Escobal 8, Tecson 8, Marcelo 7, Hermida 6, Maggay 6, Lanete 3, Taganas 2

Perpetual 62- Kong 18, Reyes 14, Liaz 11, Lee 7, Salanga 4, Manuel 4, Ynion 2, Balboa 2, Joe 0, Dysam 0

Quarter scores: 24-8; 43-24; 67-45; 86-62

malakas din ang Mapua, remember 6 pts lang lamang ng CSB 4pts sa CSJL… hope RL will make a W even without Sam…

Animo San Beda!!!

San Beda Red Lions, doesn’t and will never play dirty basketball. The NCAA MANCOM, must issue a stern warning to NCAA teams who play dirty like UPHR, not to undermine the gains of the NCAA just to derail San Beda’s back to back championship bid.

based on the articles i have read, parang itong Supan na to from JRU is really against RL… JRU desperado ng makakuha ng title… magnum we cannot expect from the MANCOM headed by people like Suman..:)

he’s been the NCAA MVP-ROY last year… the way he play di na natin masasabing baguhan sya… i think ‘yong ginawa nya fair lang ‘yon, paano kung naaksidente sya? anyway its time for the RL to show that they can win even without Sam!!!

Animo San Beda!!!

With all due respect to the MANCOM…this is a chance for them to show that indeed the NCAA has come around from the doldrum of obscurity…
the heck…the RED Lions and the its supporters singlehandedly turned this league around and all were asking is a leveled playing field and the ax to fall on those who played dirty ball.

if indeed Ekwe will be suspended for the rest of the season, and RED LIONS fans will be gone, then what will happen to NCAA? Think… During the opening of this season’s NCAA, San Beda fans almost accupied half of the Big dome.. one wrong ove by the MANCOM and they will see the might of the Roaring LION!

Di mo na gets sinasabi ko. Baguhan pa sa laro si Ekwe. Di basketball ang natural niyang laro. Don’t get me wrong, pro Beda ako. πŸ™‚

Sam Ekwe will only be suspended for 1 game. He will pay for it in their next game against the Cardinals on Wednesday, July 02, 2007. It will be a good test for the Red Lions without Sam Ekwe in the mix.

Sad to say, the player who throws in the first “blow” will be slapped with the violation. Inis talo kung baga. Too bad the NCAA does not allow any instant reply or else….
