UST statement on JoJo Duncil

( note: this piece was taken from the sports page of THE PHILIPPINE CHRONICLE, edited by long-time Sports Editor Al Mendoza, dated July 3, 2007. THE PHILIPPINE CHRONICLE printed the Duncil’s story last June 7, 2007).

UAAP president Fr. Ermito De Sagon of the University of Santo Tomas admitted yesterday that Jojo Duncil has “two NSO-certified birth certificates.”

“One birth certificate will make him eligible, one will make him ineligible,” said De Sagon when asked about the controversy surrounding Duncil during press conference launching of 70th UAAP season at the ELJ Building at the ABS-CBN Complex along Mother Ignacia St., Q.C.

De Sagon said that allowing Duncil to play this season might create additional burden for the other UST players as “their games might be questioned.”

“It will be better for the team if he will turn pro. In fact, that was his real intention,” said De Sagon.

Duncil, last year’s Finals MVP after UST beat Ateneo for the title, decided to quit last week and announced his intention to join the PBA Draft in August. (See related story.)

De Sagon said that he had known about the two birth certificates – one dated 1982 and the other1983 – from Duncil’s family.

(The Chronicle has an original copy of the 1982 birth certificate of Duncil, duly certified by the NSO, and a photo copy of an alleged NSO certificate stating Duncil’s birth year as 1983.)

“We have no doubts about him. He is a good boy. The only problem really is that he has two certified birth certificates,” said De Sagon.

De Sagon did not give any more details, saying “UST is not talking about the issue anymore.”

De Sagon’s statements overshadowed the announcement of the launch of the 70th UAAP season, which will open this Saturday, July 7, at the Araneta Coliseum.

Coaches Pido Jarencio of UST, Norman Black of Ateneo, Franz Pumaren of La Salle , Dindo Pumaren of the University of the East, Bogs Adornado of Adamson, Glenn Capacio of Far Eastern U, Manny Dandan of National U, and University of the Philippines ‘ assistant coach Ramil Cruz were present together with some of their players.

The league also released its first round schedule yesterday.

La Salle , after a one-year suspension from the league, returns to the floor against UP at 2 pm , followed by the game between NU and FEU at 4 pm on Saturday.

Ateneo takes on Adamson at 2 pm while UST starts defense of its title against UE East at 4 pm on Sunday, July 8, at the Cuneta Astrodome.

How could that Fr. De Sagun has admitted that Jojo has two birth certificates with a different birth year?

He only put his player into a bad light.

My suggestion to him is very simple: Please show the public the two documents and explain why this happens.

I hope they just waited for the UAAP board’s decision… Or at the same time, they conduct their own investigation and show the public that Jojo is innocent.

He did the wrong move, I guess…
