“This is going to be a winning season for UP,” remarks from the positive and determined mentor of the UP Fighting Maroons.

Head Coach Joe Lipa returns with another young yet more ‘complete’ UP force for the 70th season of the UAAP.

After finishing 6th out of seven teams last season (with a 4-8 win-loss record), the Fighting Maroons are back with a line up half-full of rookies freshly picked from rival schools like Ateneo HS, FEU-FERN and San Beda, among others.

With Marvin Cruz bound for the pro ranks, duly appointed Team Captain Vicmel Epres is expected to be more aggressive and more vocal to his teammates. As the underdogs this season, Epres took it as a challenge. The pressure of winning outweighed the perception of others to win now.

Aside from Epres, sophomore VJ Serios is also expected to set the standards for the Maroons. Serios admits that he feels the pressure but is treating the task ahead as an inspiration.

Woody Co is another fighting maroon also expected to figure well this season. Co, a late bloomer after several games in the first round, bagged the Rookie of the Year last season. Fighting Maroon suppeorters should also look forward to versatile Migs De Asis and Martin Reyes who can light it up from just about any spot on the floor.

Speedy Mike Gamboa from Ateneo HS will be the fighting maroon’s starting point guard. The used-to-be controversial Soc Rivera from FEU-FERN, will be the go-to-guy inside the shaded lane. There is also sophomore Magi Sison and the vastly improved Agi Agbayani who just came back from an injury.

The team spent most of their practices redefining thier defense and transition offense. And even though last year’s squad was far more powerful than this one, the team’s camaraderie is incomparable, despite having seven rookies occupying the line up. Coach Joe Lipa is proud of his team’s cohesive drive to perform better.
