After three tries, Altas notches 1st win

University of Perpertual Help made a tally in thier win column with an inspiring 62-52 victory win over College of Saint Benilde Blazers in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Altas sustained its hot start to control the rest of regulation, giving them their first win after three games and move to sixth place over winless Mapua. The Blazers suffered their second straight defeat and tied the Altas with the same 1-2 record.

Altas’ Mike Kong and Virgilio Manuel led the onslaught in the first quarter, while Flavio Liaz spearheaded the breakaway at the start of the third and they never relinquished the lead.

“No excuses about our first two losses,” said Altas mentor Arturo Bai Cristobal. “We lost those two games, and now my players have learned to adjust.”

The Las Piñas-based squad found themselves ahead for the duration of the game. Kong’s two three-pointers and Manuel’s five points were the highest player contributions in the first quarter.

Sophomore playmaker Michael Kong, who finished with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, scored two triples with few seconds left in the opening quarter to give the Altas a 19-13 lead on the way to the second quarter.

Both teams exchanged heaves from the outside in the second period, as Kong had the last conversion of the game to make it 28-21 for the Altas with 4:45 minutes before halftime.

It was appropriate that Garri Sevilla finished the period with a trey just before the halftime buzzer to let the Blazers inch closer with a score at 27-33.

Liaz, who finished with 14 points, rolled-out at the start of the second half with nine points and spark an 11-0 run. That run continued the lead for Perpetual heading toward the last quarter, 50-40. The Blazers never recovered from there.
