7 07 2007

The Green Archers are fired up.

Coming back from suspension, the De La Salle Green Archers showed just how much they missed playing in the UAAP after securing an 82-61 victory over the UP Fighting Maroons yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum.

“We’re just so excited to be back. Just like playing for the first time. Everybody felt like playing in a high school team,” said Archer Coach Franz Pumaren.

La Salle started strong with a 14-0 run in the first 4 minutes of the first period. Only Magi Sison’s quick hit from behind the arc plus avoiding a 24-sec shot clock violation, stopped the scorching Green Archers. But La Salle ignited another 6-0 run to bring the lead up to 17 points.

Two 3-point shots from Martin Reyes and Woody Co did not suffice as Coach Joe Lipa’s Fighting Maroons settled for a 12-point deficit, 23-11, at the end of the 1st quarter.

UP tried to get back in the game, enlisting as much as La Salle in 2nd quarter. Cholo Villanueva and James Mangahas were on fire for the Green Archers while Mike Gamboa and VJ Serios made it worthwhile for the UP fans to keep on cheering. Gamboa’s last shot with five seconds left concluded the first half, 39-27 for La Salle.

The third quarter started even for both teams. Mangahas was still hot. Scoring a hefty 6 out of the Archers’ 10 points in the first 3:30 minutes of the quarter. Reyes and Co reciprocates for UP. While Migs de Asis made his first of two baskets with a 3-pointer under 5:55 minutes of the 3rd.

With 5:30 minutes remaining, the Archers ignited a 7-0 run that buried the boys from Diliman to a 21-point deficit. Both teams showed poor free throw shooting with Vicmel Epres, Soc Rivera, Simon Atkins and Dexter Rosales each made 0/8. UP was still behind 58-42 at the end of three quarters.

In the final quarter, veterans Villanueva, TY Tang and JV Casio brought streched the lead even further. Tang notched 8 of La Salle’s 24 points while Villanueva and Casio combined for 8-points. The Maroons continued to miss despite the effort of rookie-point guard Mike Gamboa.

“UP has a very solid line-up. They just had a jittery start. They’re better in man-for-man than La Salle,” said Coach Pumaren applauding UP. “In fact, they are better than La Salle in man-for-man.”

La Salle will next face Adamson whom Coach Franz said is very fortunate to have Bogs Adornado as their coach. On the other hand, it will be another Battle of Katipunan series when UP faces Ateneo on Thursday.
