Was it sweet revenge for UE? a replay of 2006’s final four series. But this time, it had a different outcome.

The UE Red Warriors proved that they are one of the contenders as they slaughtered the UAAP defending champions, the UST Growling Tigers, 73-60, in UAAP season 70 at the Cuneta Astrodome yesterday.

“Everybody played well especially the five guys that played in PBL,” said Coach Dindo Pumaren.

UE led consistently for the first two quarters via a 5-point margin.

Coach Pido Jarencio’s UST got back in the game only in the 3rd quarter when Jerby Cruz made an easy baseline basket followed by a free throw from Japs Cuan to tie the game at 43. However, a 3-pointer from Fhadzmir Bandaying and a jumper from Hans Thiele brought the lead back to three, 48-45 for UE.

The Warriors took control of the final quarter with Mark Borboran being the go-to guy for the Red Warriors. Cuan’s single-handed effort could only take UST to a 13-point loss to UE.

Borboran led the Warriors in the tally sheet with 13 points and 4 rebounds while vastly improved James Martinez and Thiele contributed for a combined 23 points.

Cruz and Cuan made combined for 29 points for the Growling Tigers, and grabbing 9 boards a piece. Anthony Espiritu who was expected to create for Santo Tomas was scoreless, with only 3 rebounds under his name.

“One motivation that I gave the players was our lost against UST last year,” said Coach Dindo pertaining to their semi-final lost against the boys from España, who eventually brought home the bacon.

Although UE played exceptionally well, Coach Dindo said it straight in saying, “This is not a statement game.”

UE faces another remarkable team in National University on Thursday while the Growling Tigers’ next opponent is FEU on Saturday which will be held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
