San Beda College, celebrating the return of Samuel Ekwe from a one-game suspension, roared to its fourth straight win by routing the College of Saint Benilde Blazers, 87-65, to stay unscathed in the 83 rd NCAA men’s basketball Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan City.

For the second time, Rogemar Menor top scored for the Red Lions with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and collected eight rebounds, while Riego Gamalinda and Dave Marcelo added eight points each to hand the Blazers their third straight loss after four games.

“Every game, I just keep on shooting and I finally got my range,” said Menor, an MVP during his junior year in NCAA. “The return of Sam further boosted our confidence.”

With a 3-point lead by halftime (47-44), Ekwe delivered 15 points, 22 rebounds and three blocked shots, sparked the Red Lions’ 18-5 attack plus a two-handed slam and post a huge 65-49 lead with 1:34 remaining in third quarter. The Blazers inched closer, 56-65, after Martin Urra nailed a triple before the end of the third period.

But the Red Lions rolled past the Blazers to a 85-63 advantage in the final 1:48 mark and were never threatened from there. Forward Yousef Aljamal delivered 12 of his 20 points in the payoff period.

“We made a big defensive stop especially in the third quarter and it looked good. It’s a good win going to our nine-day break,” said Red Lions mentor Frankie Lim.

Urra had 11 points and five rebounds while Christian Cabatu added 10 points and four rebounds for the Blazers. It is also the Blazers’ their third consecutive loss of the series.

The Red Lions’ scoring rampage in the second half, where they tallied 18-12 and 22-9 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, had full control of the game. San Beda also out-rebounded Saint Benilde, 67-30.

The San Beda and Letran match on July 25 is getting more interesting and the stakes are getting higher. If they both win their next assignments, it’s going to be a match of who’s going to draw the first stick in the loss column of their opponent.

Hindi naman siguro kinakabahan ang Letran. Kasi like San Beda, they have been tearing their opponents apart.

Coach Alas can use a motivanal ploy that when they play SBC they have nothing to loose, we can be spoilers attitude, and that makes them a dangerous opponent. I hope the Red Lions wont fall for that trap.

Yup that’s moot and academic… SBC has the edge to win convincingly in any team.
