Red Warriors for win No. 2

The Bulldogs came out short. The UE Red Warriors took care the NU Bulldogs’ late rally to close out a 82-75 win Thursday for its second straight victory in the 70th UAAP men’s basketball at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The Red Warriors, squandered a 22-point lead, woke up in the last minute mark to hang on and deliver the Bulldogs’ first loss after winning against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the opener.

“NU was frustrated so I told the boys to be aggressive,” said UE coach Dindo Pumaren. “We have to play tough against NU because it is really a strong team.”

UE Utility Man Marcy Arellano scored six of his 21 points in a 9-0 run that ballooned UE’s lead to 16 points, 45-29.

Jonathan Fernandez and Jonathan Jahnke knocked in four of NU’s five three-pointers in a 22-3 blast in the fourth period to cut the deficit to one point, 73-72, with 1:58 minutes left. Arellano stopped the bleeding with a three-point play and Hans Thiele split his free throws to gain a 76-72 lead.

Toto Bandaying provided some breathing space after scoring two free throws with 1:18 left for a 78-72 lead after Jahnke made an ill-advised cross court pass to Chris Catamora that sailed towards the sidelines.

After a triple by NU’s Cyrus Malagueno to make the tally at 78-75, the Bulldogs came up empty after Thiele once again grabbed an offensive rebound with 21.3 seconds left. That rebound led to two free throws to put an end to the Bulldogs’ threat.

Ironically, Bandaying was called for a technical foul after throwing the ball at NU’s Jessey Garcia that sparked the Bulldogs’ rally in the 3rd quarter.

“That technical foul was the turning point of the ball game. It was a silly thing to do,” said Pumaren.

With the win, UE and Ateneo are tied with a 2-0 slate. Both teams will go at each other on Sunday.

Kelvin Gregorio scored 18 points for the Red Warriors.
