Altas ground Heavy Bombers

In two exhausting overtimes, the Heavy Bombers were defused in a Friday the 13th ballgame.

University of Perpetual Help relied on its three-point shooting prowess to squeeze out a heart-stopping 79-72 win in double overtime for its second win in five games in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City.

Scoring on their timely three-point shots in both extension periods, the Altas managed to hang on and moved to fourth spot with a 2-3 record, while the Heavy Bombers suffered their third defeat in four outings.

“I almost surrendered due because of our turnovers but I’m surprised the boys are still fighting despite the unfavorable situation,” said Perpetual Coach Arturo “Bai” Cristobal. “I credited my players for this impressive win. I hope they would maintain the same character.”

Rugged guard Mike Kong, who hit 21 points to pace the Altas, scored the game-tying three-point basket off a broken play in the last 4.2 seconds f play to forge a 60-all deadlock in the first overtime.

In the second overtime, it was Lee who hit the game-tying triple with 5.1 seconds left that forced another five-minute extension.

Bruce Reyes and Mike Kong fired their own set of baskets the from outside to the delight of the boisterous UPHD crowd and produced a 10-0 burst in the second extension to earn a huge 77-68 lead with 1:23 minutes left.

Kong finished 5-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc and went along with four rebounds, six assists, three steals, and a block, while Bruce Reyes added 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Korean Lee Sang Myon produced 13 points, while Rommel Balboa produced a double-double with 10 and 11 boards and rookie Franz Dysam also had 10 points.

Jay-R Sena had 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and blocked two shots, while Marvin Hayes produced another double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds. Jayson Nocom chalked up 11 points.

The Altas started the initial run that bridged the initial quarters to go up, 19-11.

JRU made sure Perpetual won’t get away too far as Sena unleashed nine points in a 13-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead, 30-23.

JRU controlled most of the third period, with John Wilson making it seven, 47-40, with 32 seconds before the quarter ended.
