DE La Salle University showed aggression and grit to beat Far Eastern University, 64-61, on Thursday and gain its third straight win in the 70 th UAAP men’s basketball at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The Green Archers have encountered their first challenge of the year. The Tamaraws used its size advantage in some positions and athleticism throughout the ball game to keep the Green Archers at bay.

The La Salle Green Archers, after serving a one-year suspension, clawed back from a 22-11 deficit in the second quarter to win over the Tamaraws and tie the University of the East Warriors on top with identical 3-0 slate. FEU slipped to 1-2.

“I hate to say this, but my players seemed to be over-confident,” said La Salle coach Franz Pumaren. “The upside of this win is we’re tested. It’s a good test for us, especially with my players running away from what we’re supposed to do.”

La Salle never relinquished the lead after Rico Maierhofer scored on a short stab to break a 57-all deadlock, under three minutes to go. The lanky Maierhofer widdened the gap to four after scoring a follow-up to take a 62-58 lead, with 1:53 minutes left.

FEU’s Mac Baracael cut the deficit to one with a three-pointer but La Salle s Cholo Villanueva scored from the strip, 64-61, with 8.9 secnods remaining.

FEU had two chances to take the game into overtime but Paul Sanga and JR Cawaling missed their attempts from downtown as the buzzer expired.

“They are playing for the crowd, thinking every game is like a walk in the park just like our two previous wins.”

Maierhofer had 11 points and 8 rebounds, while Peejay Barua also had 11 and James Mangahas and Joseph Casio added eight points each.

La Salle shot a poor 30.9 percent from the field, way below its 44 percent accuracy against the Maroons and Falcons.

The Green Archers are in a tie with University of the East (3-0) and will face each other on Sunday in a battle for the solo lead at the Cuneta Astrodome.
