WITH three losses to thier name, the Heavy Bombers refused to fold this time.

Host Jose Rizal University squandered an insurmountable 21-point third quarter lead before blasting and at the same time upsetting the Letran Knights, 79-75, on Friday in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City .

The Heavy Bombers, with the win, have improved to 2-3 slate to occupy solo fourth place, and snapped the Knights’ amazing four-game winning streak after five games. But Letran stays in second place.

“We dropped the last two games after collapsing in the fourth quarter,” said JRU mentor Ariel Vanguardia, whose team ended a two-game losing skid. “In this game, we’re at the same situation,”

The Knights attempted many empty baskets, going 26-out-of-68 (38%) total field goals. The Heavy Bombers applied a box in one tactic. It’s primary objective, to limit RJ Jazul, but it only took 3 quarters before he exploded in the fourth. Bulangis, Cagoco and Nocom took turns in stopping Letran’s go to guy.

“Well, it is good when you learn from your previous losses and I think we are due for a win and, probably, Letran is due for a loss,” said Vanguardia, a former assistant of Letran head coach Louie Alas.

The Knights commenced the counter offensive, tying the game at 19-all. But a Nocom three-pointer from a Cagoco feed made it 33-22, the largest lead by the Heavy Bombers at the first half.

The Heavy Bombers were in complete control as they posted the game’s biggest lead at 68-47 after forward Alvin Se scored on an under-goal stab with two seconds left in the third quarter.

But the Knights tightened their defense in the payoff period, forcing the Heavy Bombers to miss eight of their nine shots. While using a 23-5 run to close the gap at 70-73 on two free throws by RJ Jazul with 1:50 left to play.

JRU, however, went 6-of-8 from the foul line courtesy of guards John Wilson and Marc Cagoco to keep Letran at bay and presrved the win. It was also the Heavy Bombers’ first win against the Knights in three seasons.

Wilson provided 23 points to lead the Bombers, while forward Marvin Hayes added 15 points and nine rebounds. Jay Sena and Jason Nocom finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Jazul led the Knights with 19 points, most of them in the 4th quarter. While big man Bryan Faundo chipped in 13 points.
