Red Lions now 5-0

20 07 2007

UNLIKE the Knights, the Red Lions remain unbeaten. The San Beda Red Lions, the defending NCAA champs, captured its fifth straight win to stay solo on top after scoring an inspiring 73-64 victory over San Sebastian College Golden Stags last July 20 in the 83 rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Red Lions, behind their balance attack and rock-solid defense, kept the lead the rest of the way and hand the Golden Stags a 3-3 win-loss card to move one-game closer in sweeping the first round. But the Golden Stags did the right thing by applying single coverage on Sam Ekwe and keep the perimeter covered from dribble penetrations and wide open looks.

“We just have to play with intensity despite missing several shots,” said SBC head coach Frankie Lim. “Everybody really wants to beat us, so we really need to play tough all-throughout the season.”

San Beda may sweep the first round on July 25 at The Arena if they beat the Letran Knights.

With the entire San Beda crowd going on its feet, the Red Lions roared to a 21-10 first quarter lead.

Borgie Hermida’s field goal early in second period was San Beda’s biggest lead, 25-12. Two Francis de Leon shots ended a 9-0 run, trimming the lead down to 25-28 with 5:30 minutes left.

The Golden Stags were able to close in at 50-54 when Aquino drilled a three-point play off Garvo Lanete with 7:17 minutes to go in fourth quarter. But Menor and Escobal scored with a trey each to stave-off San Sebastian’s rally.

San Beda is now alone at the top spot after host Jose Rizal University dealt Letran its first setback with a 79-75 victory in the first game.

Guard Pong Escobal top scored with 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, while Sam Ekwe added 15 points, hauled 17 rebounds and got seven blocks, and Rogemar Menor also scored 15 points.

Jimbo Aquino had 16 points while Gilbert Bulawan chipped in 11 points for the Golden Stags.

Ekwe delivered the coup de grace in the last minute by a two-handed dunk highlight.

So far, this is the Lions’ lowest winning margin this season.

The scores:
