2nd straight win for the Growling Tigers

21 07 2007

After two weeks in limbo, the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers are back with a vengeance after claiming their 2nd straight win over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium last July 21. UST is now 2-2 after toppling the Falcons last July 19.

It was a tight first quarter match where Woody Co and Francis Allera took early control of the game.

After three 3-pointers from Allera, Dylan Ababou and Japs Cuan, the Growling Tigers led by 10 points with 2:53 minutes in the first half. FGs from from Co and Mark Lopez and a 2/2 FT by Jay Agbayani cut the lead down to five. But a powerful finish and a bonus free throw from Jervy Cruz took it back to an 8-point ballgame, 43-35 for UST.

In the 3rd quarter, Anthony Espiritu notched a hefty 7 points in the first two minutes of the game. UST ignited a 6-0 run with 7:06 minutes to play, giving UP a 16-point deficit, 54-38. But the Fighting Maroons ignited an 8-0 run with 4:37 minutes left to play and cut their deficit down to 8-points, 54-46.

But two three-point bombs from Espiritu and Allera in the dying minutes of the quarter pushed UST’s lead to 11-points, 62-51 at the end of three quarters. Ababou and Allera once again leveled up for the Tigers making it a 14-point game, 70-56 with 4:42 minutes left to play.

But known for their school monicker, the Fighting Maroons showed momentum in the final minutes to spark an 11-1 run with a minute left in the clock, 73-68. But the effort was not enough as Cruz completed a follow-up off a miss by Canlas. Ababou’s 1/2 FT wrapped the game for UST, 76-68.

After the game, Coach Pido Jarencio admitted he’s still monitoring the performance of his backcount. “You’ll see that they (Cuan and Badua) can really play good.”

UST’s next game will be against National University on July 26 at 2 p.m at the Araneta Coliseum.

Meanwhile, UP is still looking for a win (0-4). They face the University of the East Red Warriors on Saturday, July 28, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
