Heavy Bombers whip Blazers for get back-to-back wins

26 07 2007

ARIEL Vanguardia, the Heavy Bombers mentor, has nothing to say but keep this kind of confidence towards the second round.

Host Jose Rizal University blasted College of Saint Benilde, 74-63, last July 25 and improve its record to 3-3 at the end of first round of the 83 rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

James Sena scored 19 points and had eight rebounds while John Wilson and Marvin Hayes registered double-double performances to help the Heavy Bombers score their first back-to-back wins this season.

The win also put the Bombers on a two-way tie for third with the San Sebastian Golden Stags having a similar 3-3 win-loss record. The Blazers absobed their fifth straight defeat for a 1-5 record.

Wilson contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Hayes chipped in 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Bombers. Mark Gagoco also had 13 points.

“It’s nice to win back-to-back for the first time, and a good motivation going to the second round,” JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia. “We are aiming higher and we are peaking at the right time. We just have to keep our confidence.”

JRU moved closer in equaling the four wins it had the previous season.

The Bombers are hoping to make the Final Four for the first time in four seasons.

William Johnston was the only St. Benilde player who finished in double figures with 10 points.

The Blazers lone victory was against the Mapua Cardinals last June 27.

The Heavy Bombers took a 19-15 cushion at the end of first period and pushed to a 39-29 by halftime.

The Heavy Bombers had a similar defensive strategy that they used against the Letran Knights, only this time the focus is on stopping Blazer main man Paolo Orbeta.

After a slow start in third quarter at 21-15, JRU had a strong performance in the payoff period to stretch its advantage to 68-56 with 4:13 minutes left and never looked back.
