Red Lions’ sweep halted by Knights

26 07 2007

A game that was reminicent of the good ole days of the NCAA. This game is one for the scrapbooks and it was a classic basketball game indeed. Probably a preview of the finals but who knows, anything can still happen and don’t count your marbles just yet. That was assured by Rey Guevarra and the rest of the Knights last July 25.

Guevarra pumped in six straight points in the last 51 seconds to carry Letran College to a dramatic 70-69 win over San Beda College. The Knights also claim solo leadership at the end of first round of 83 rd NCAA men’s basketball.

After Escobal’s long two in the last 18 seconds for the Red Lions’ 79-78 lead, Letran forward Guevarra scored on a streaking two hander with only 3.2 seconds left in regulation to frustrate the San Beda College fans that occupy most of the stands at The Arena in San Juan City.

“Our coach told us most of the time during the game to attack Ekwe,” said Guevarra, who only had seven points but delivered all six points in the last minute mark. “We forced Ekwe to commit early foul trouble, so everything became easy.”

The Knights intercepted Pong Escobal’s weak inbound pass from underneath the basket that led to Letran’s opportunity for a game winning play. The win halted the five-game winning run of the Red Lions. Even though they are both tied at 5-1, Letran still got the edge due to their win over the leader advantage.

“It was 40 minutes of tremendous basketball and we won, San Beda is still the team to beat,” said Letran head Coach Louie Alas. “Our last two plays were executed well down the stretch.”

Samuel Ekwe, who only had 10 points and 13 rebounds, committed his fourth foul late in the third quarter.

6-foot-5 Dino Daa paced the Knights with 14 points and nine boards, while Bryan Faundo had 12 points and nine boards.

The Knights outscored the Red Lions in third period, 23-10, and was the turning point of the ball game especially for Letran after being down by as many 14 in the first half.

Pong Escobal, who led SBC with 17 points, scored two triples in the second quarter to give San Beda a 14-point advantage early in the second quarter, 30-16.

But the Knights unloaded a scorching 17-5 burst capped by a basket from Andro Quinday and Dino Daa to seize the edge at the end of the third quarter, 50-44.

The Red Lions and the Knights engaged in a close fight in the final quarter, where San Beda both times took the edge but Guevarra took charge.

Escobal’s last basket with 18 seconds left was later contested by San Beda mentor Frankie Lim, as he insisted that it was a three-pointer.

It took 15 minutes before commissioner Chito Narvasa ruled the basket as a two-pointer based on video replays and referee’s decision.

“It’s their prerogative to question (the shot). It’s their privilege to seek an appeal,” said Narvasa. Rafael Jazul and Andro Quinday had nine points apiece for the Knights.

Red Lions’ leading scorer Rogemar Menor was limited to 12 points.

The Scores:

Letran (70) – Daa 14, Faundo 12, Jazul 9, Quinday 9, Guevarra 7, Reposar 7, Melegrito 6, Cabonce 6, Del Rosario 0, Gutilban 0, Dangcal 0, Latonio 0.

SBC (69) – Escobal 17, Menor 12, Ekwe 10, Aljamal 9, Gamalinda 8, Maggay 8, Hermida 2, Lanete 2, Marcelo 1.

Quarter scores: 12-23, 27-34, 50-44, 70-69
