Cardinals lost steam

It initially looked like it was going to be another setback. It took a lot of emotional boost from Coach Frankie Lim to wake them up and stand tall, with pride. The looked anemic, might be from their previous defeat, but do not under estimate a heart of a champion.

San Beda overcame three sluggish quarters then unleashing a fourth quarter storm to whip the Mapua Cardinals, 89-75, last July 27 and keep abreast with Letran College on top of the leader board of 83rd NCAA men’s basketball at The Arena in San Juan City .

Behind their tall frontlines, led by Samuel Ekwe, the Red Lions unloaded a blistering 26-10 burst in the last quarter to deal the Cardinals their fifth loss against only two wins.

Playmaker Borgie Hermida stood tall as he made seven points to lead a crippling 14-0 run in the face of the Cardinals in the third quarter. Then commanding an 11-0 rally in the payoff period to erase the Cardinals’ advantage in the first three periods.

We have to win this game, said SBC coach Frankie Lim. We have to start strong. Apparently, we started soft”, added Coach Lim.

Pong Escobal drilled in 23 points and issued five assists to pace San Beda, while last year’s MVP Sam Ekwe poured in 19 points along with 22 rebounds and two blocks And Hermida fired all 12 points in the second half.

Forward Yousif Aljamal had a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards and Rogermar Menor finished with 10 points.

“We were overconfident”, Lim said. Our record is very deceiving because it tends to make us relax”.

“We gave up 25 offensive rebounds against Letran”, said Lim about their defeat two days back. It is all about attitude, effort, and desire”, added Coach Lim.

Mapua, using only seven players, was led by Jerby Del Rosario with 19 points and ten rebounds. Kelvin Dela Pena had 16 points, eight boards, three steals, and two blocks in 36 minutes of playing time.

The Cardinals were up, 15-7, midway the first quarter and they continued their surge in the second period, with Mark Acosta scoring against Ekwe, 28-21, with 6:05 minutes left.

Ekwe and Garvo Lanete joined forces to trim down the gap to 28-30.

Ekwe was called for a goal-tending violation that gave Mapua its biggest lead, 41-33, with 1:07 minutes before halftime.

San Beda bounced back immediately in third quarter. They seized the edge at 60-56 with 3:26 minutes left after Hermida’s trey and Ekwe’s stunning hook shot.

Dela Pena, Teree Guillermo and Banal provided the Cardinals’ last advantage at 68-63. But the Red Lions dropped an 11-0 bomb capped by Escobal’s seven points to snatch the lead, 74-68, in the final four minutes.
