Guevarra stays consistent, bails out Knights

27 07 2007

SHOWING he is for real, Rey Guevarra proved that he can do it again.

Guevarra bailed out Letran College from possible defeat by hitting two-game winning free throws with only 10.7 seconds left to score a 51-49 squeaker over the the College of Saint Benilde Blazers in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball last July 27 at The Arena in San Juan City.

The 6-foot-2 Guevarra, Letran’s hero in their 70-69 win over reigning champion San Beda College last July 25, scored 11 of 14 points in the second half to move the Knights to six victories against a single loss to hold its position at no. 1. He scored two charities off a Garri Sevilla foul for the two-point advantage.

In the ensuing play, Paolo Orbeta failed to end the Blazers’ woes when he lost control of the ball to Knights guard RJ Jazul while trying to aim for a three-pointer with four seconds remaining.

It cost CSB its sixth straight setback to fall at 1-6.

Despite the win, the Knights were able to overcome a poor first half, probably sleepwalking from thier honeymoon victory over the defending champions, where they scored an atrocious 5-of-25 shooting from the field. In the first quarter alone, Letran missed 10 of their 12 attempts.

They played bad in the first half but down the stretch, we showed a lot of character,・said Letran mentor Louie Alas. Rey (Guevarra) bailed us out again, he’s very capable of taking over when the going gets tough.

Jazul added 10 points for Letran and got a combined 24 rebounds from big guys Dino Daa and Bryan Faundo.

Harvey Porras, the only Blazers who scored in double figures, led the Blazers with 12 points.

CSB was still ahead, 45-39, after Porras scored a lay-up with 5:08 minutes left.

But the Knights unleashed a 10-4 run, capped by two triples from Guevarra and one from Jazul to tie the count at 49-all in the last 1:49 minutes of the ballgame.
