UE now 5-0

James Martinez’s game high 23 points including 6 of 7 three-pointers could be the biggest factor for the 31-point UE lead over the UP Fighting Maroons last July 28 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The University of the East is now 5-0, a complete opposite of UP’s 0-5.

Fhadzmir Bandaying who pumped in a hefty 14 points also made 4 out of six 3-point FGs. Narciso Llagas contributed 12 points while Jorel Cañizares and Hans Thiele made 10 apiece to boost UE’s biggest lead this season.

The Fighting Maroons, led by Migs De Asis, had a promising start after igniting a 7-1 run over the Warriors in the first 3 minutes. But UE ceased the run and sparked its own 12-0 courtesy of Martinez, Bandaying and Canizares with 2:26 minutes left to play.

Martinez’s quadruple 3’s forced the 10-point UP deficit after the first period, 30-20.

In the second quarter, Mark Borboran, Martinez and Marcy Arellano made four triples in the first 5-minute stretch. Martinez’s three-point shot with 4:45 minutes to play in the quarter pushed UE further for a 45-26 lead.

A couple of shots and a completed 3-point play by Llagas further pushed UE’s lead to twenty, 58-38.

In the third quarter another three-point bomb from Martinez fired up a 10-0 run for UE. Contributing to the run were Bandaying who made another three. Thiele’s putback with 1.30 secs provided the boost for a 31 point lead. UE maintained their 31-point advantage until the closing for a 97-66 finish.

“We expected them to play zone. Our gameplan was to bring the ball inside,” said Coach Dindo Pumaren. “Luckily we made three point shots, mostly coming from James.”

Coach Dindo Pumaren is very happy to see the maturity in his players. “I can see the confidence in my players. We’re taking it one game at a time.”
