Heavy Bombers down Cardinals

It might be Jose Rizal University’s year. The Heavy Bombers, after three years, finally scored a three-game winning streak last August 1 by extracting a vengeful 69-61 win over the Mapua Cardinals in the 83rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

Even with the absence of two key players, the Heavy Bombers stayed unstoppable from start to finish, marking their fourth win after seven games, moving in third place of the standings. The struggling Cardinals dropped to 2-6.

James Sena typified the Heavy Bombers’ balance attack as he finished with a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds in 30 minutes of action, while sophomore playmaker Mark Cagoco pitched for 13 points and John Wilson had 12.

The victory was the first time that JRU is above the .500-mark under the school’s vigorous Athletic Director Paul Supan.

“It took us so long to win three straight games,” said JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia. “This is our first time to hit the .500 mark. I’m hoping we maintain our winning streak that would intensify our bid for a slot in the final four.”

The Heavy Bombers played without center Jayson Nocom, a reliable reliever of Sena, and guard Carlo Lituania, who were hospitalized because of food poisoning.

But JRU remained competitive the rest of the way.

After a 17-13 lead in the first quarter, the Heavy Bombers took a 33-26 cushion at halftime before grabbing a huge 55-43 lead at the end of the third period.

Marvin Hayes, who added another double-double feat with 13 points and 11 rebounds, gave the Heavy Bombers their biggest lead, 60-45, with 7:15 minutes left in the game.

The win avenged the Bombers’ first round setback to the Cardinals, 80-86, last July 6. Mapua got 15 points from Sean Co.

bakit puro sa san juan arena lang ang venue ng mga laro ng NCAA? low budget ba NC ngaun taon kaya di makapag ARANETA? oi JRU, kayo host this year, ayusin nyo naman! kapag big games, parang walang dating…
