Knights humble Altas

DESPITE the ugly win, the Knights controlled the game all-throughout to clinch a playoff berth in the semifinal round.

Letran College defeated sluggish University of Perpetual Help, 63-56, and register its third straight win and improve its record to 7-1 in the 83 rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament last August 1 at The Arena in San Juan City.

The win made the Knights to break-free from defending champion and archrival San Beda College (6-1) and grab solo leadership.

Carlo Reposar came off the bench to lead Letran with 12 points, while guard Rafael Jazul and forward Dennis Daa chipped in 11 points each.

Letran coach Louie Alas was dismayed after his team’s slow start. “It was an ugly win,” said Letran coach Louie Alas. “They’re flat at the start, but good thing is my second stringers gave us another solid game. But we have to improve it.”

It was also a repeat against the Altas, whom they beat in the first round (68-52).

“I reminded them (at halftime) that this is not the way we should perform if we want to go to the next level. We’re not a strong team, so we have to keep working hard every game,” said Alas.

After a dismal 9-13 deficit in the first period, the Knights bounced back to outscore the Altas in the next period, 18-6, and take a 27-19 bubble at halftime. A three-pointer by Anjoe Latonio early in the final quarter gave the Knights their biggest lead at 50-38.

Michael Kong led Perpetual Help with 19 points – including six treys, but the Altas dropped to 2-5.

Perpetual Help came within 52-56 with a minute left after Kong’s triple, but Dino Daa countered a three-point play with 39 seconds to go that extended Letran’s edge, 59-52. The Knights were invincible the rest of the way.

Letran really deserved to win that game vs. SBC. They are not strong and they no it. But they prepared for that SBC game and they play as a team.
