Shock and Awe by UE, now 6-0

UNIVERSITY of the East is zeroing in on its “sweet sweep.”

The UE Red Warriors executed their blueprint running game for an easy 89-60 win over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws last August 2 in the 70th UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

With its defense hounding FEU all game long and their offense clicking, UE went as far as 39 points to give FEU a 3-3 slate in the standings. The Red Warriors, in first place at 6-0, are just a game away to sweep the first round.

“We know FEU’s morale is high after winning over Ateneo,” said UE coach Dindo Pumaren. “So our game plan was to pressure them and frustrate them in bringing down the ball,” said U.E. coach Dindo Pumaren.

The Red Warriors’ defense contained the Tamaraws and led them to a 16-2 run to end the first quarter ahead, 24-12.

A 10-2 attack of UE had stretched its advantage in the second canto to a comfortable 34-18 lead.

The gap expanded to 26 in the third quarter after a Gregorio fast break lay up, 54-28, with 9:14 minutes to go.

In the fourth quarter, UE with just a point away for the 40-point mark, Gregorio hit a three for an 86-47 count with only 3:49 minutes left in the game.

If UE wins on Saturday against the Adamson Falcons, it will be UE’s second 7-0 start since Allan Caidic’s Red Warriors in 1986.

But Pumaren downplayed any comparisons to Caidic’s team or any chance of a first round sweep going into their game against Adamson on Saturday.

“It’s different,” said Pumaren, referring to the time of Caidic. “We are not talking about sweep. Today (Yesterday), we are just focused on FEU. We are taking it one game at a time.”

Kelvin Gregorio led UE with a game-high 22 points and teammate Paul Lee had 10.

FEU’s JR Cawaling finished with 10 points, the only Tamaraw to score in double figures.

The Warriors shot 52.1% from the field and exactly 50% from beyond the arc. Their hustle board was at an even 19 fast breaks, 19 second chance points, and 19 turnover points.
